Preparing your land for hunting season

Even though hunting season is still a ways off, it’s never too early to get your land ready for it. In fact, it can take years to cultivate the right environment for optimal game, so the sooner you can get started, the better.

There are a few things to keep in mind when working to create land that will attract the game you’re seeking.

1. Understand your lands topography

If you can study your land and learn the topography, you’ll better understand what needs to happen in order to create an environment that will enhance wildlife in the area. It can show you where natural strong points are (where they might like to graze, sleep, hide, etc.) and where potential weak points are that need more work.

It will also help you understand your land in general. Where are the best spots for trails and deer stands? If you don’t know your land, you’re not going to be in a good spot to hunt on it.

2. Food plots

Not only do you need to find ways to attract animals, but you need to give them a reason to stay. It takes time to cultivate steady food plots, so the sooner you can get started on it the better. Topography study can help you find the best place(s) to cultivate food for the type of game you want to hunt. Getting your soil tested can ensure that the places you picked will thrive.

There are several factors that go into cultivating a strong food plot like clearing, aerating, fertilizing, planting, etc. So it’s important to find a strong area and develop it as thoroughly as you can.

3. Learn their habits

If you already have some wildlife activity happening on your land, then it’s important to study how they’re traveling across it. When you can determine where the game is going and how they’re traveling, you can be more intentional about how you plot different feeding points, ensuring that you will attract animals no matter what.

Finding natural borders such as swamp areas can also give you an idea into how best to herd game to where you want them to go.
